Category: Education - K-12 - ISD The 195,000-square-foot campus was constructed in the heart of the Texas Medical Center and accommodates up to 1,000 students. The school is dedicated to providing a rigorous and comprehensive pre-college program for students pursuing careers in medicine, health care, and/or the sciences. The heart of the school is a central open atrium that is surrounded by five floors. The first floor is the cafeteria, while the remaining four floors are dedicated to classrooms and teaching space. The new school features teaching labs for dental, rehabilitation, and patient care with mannequins similar to what community colleges and universities use, and the science labs are designed to feel more like a research lab instead of a high school science classroom. In addition to instructional facilities, the school includes a gym, an arts center, a music room, and outdoor terraces. As a dedicated magnet school for health professions which originally opened at Baylor College of Medicine, DeBakey has always had close ties to the Medical Center. This connection enables the school to give its students extraordinary opportunities that are not available elsewhere and that will provide them with a head start for a successful future. Category: Healthcare (New | Major Addition) The Menninger Clinic is an international specialty psychiatric center providing clinical treatment, research, and education. The lush 50-acre Epicenter advances Houston as a center of excellence in mental health treatment, education, and research, attracting leading mental health clinical specialists and researchers. Through a collaboration with Texas Medical Center institutions, The Menninger gives mental health patients access to the latest research, interventions, and medical specialty care. Treatment priorities for the 172,000 square-foot clinic include substance abuse and addictions, personality disorders, mood disorders, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders, and trauma and neuropsychiatric disorders. Phase II of The Menninger Clinic includes the Research Training and Outpatient Offices building. The 70,000 square-foot, three-story building includes office space, conference rooms, classrooms, exam rooms, dining hall, theater, and research labs. It also houses Baylor College of Medicines Psychiatric and Mood Disorder Clinic with additional teaching space. Adjacent to the building is a 128,000 square-foot, four-story parking garage that includes 396 parking spaces for the campus. Additionally, the project includes a detention pond and all associated site work. This project received the Houston Business Journal Landmark Award and the AGC's APEX Award for Project Excellence. Category: Education - K-12 - ISD Tellepsen partnered with Houston Independent School District to reconstruct the historical Milby High School. The project includes the demolition and reconstruction of the campus to accommodate 1,800 to 2,000 students. The school's new design is comprised of three stories and 280,000 square feet on a 19-acre site. The design preserves the architecturally significant building while providing a 21st-century learning environment. The schoolhouses 42 core learning centers and 14 science learning centers/wet labs. The historic core of the building is the center of the school life, housing both the learning and dining commons. The central courtyard features outdoor learning areas, eating areas, and performance spaces. The campus is organized into four distinct neighborhoods. Each neighborhood has community access points on the ground floor and includes extended learning areas for students to work and study independently or in groups. The ground floor Scout retail shop is important to funding and an outdoor courtyard provides for informal gatherings and events. The building has a beautiful stone and plaster exterior with a metal roof. The two-story lobby features rough-sawn wood trusses and a wood deck ceiling for a rustic lodge effect. The new park transforms the campus's primary visitor corridor, and provides students, faculty, staff, a campus guests a central location to relax, socialize, recreate, educate, and study in a natural setting. Two event structures to support outdoor venues and a new public food and beverage pavilion were added. Grand Hall, a new multi-purpose building, integral with the park, that will be used as an expanded venue for Ring Day, and provide much-needed office and entertainment space for The Association of Former Students and The 12th Man Foundation.
