Category: District Energy / CUP A 59,000-square-foot, four-story centralized water chilling facility with a concrete frame and an underground piping network to link office buildings and Minute Maid Park with the chilled water plant. The plant makes ice during the night when electricity is cheapest. As the ice melts during the day, it's pumped through the piping network to the buildings for use in the air conditioning systems. The plant production capacity is based on three basic types of equipment centrifugal chillers, helical screw chillers and thermal ice storage. The scope of work included construction of a 5-story patient tower and mechanical penthouse and Beacon feature. In addition, the project included construction of central plant facilities and infrastructure to support the new bed tower and for future redundancies, as well as modifications to the south tower facade and site improvements. The new tower has 90 new inpatient beds, new food services area, new cardiopulmonary department, public circulation space, and MEP support space.     < Back to Projects University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston Infrastructure-Ike Recovery Owner: University of Texas Architect: AEI Affiliated Engineers Size: 180 acres Category: Infrastructure The project encompassed a 180-acre, 114 building, campus-wide infrastructure repair of distribution systems including cathodic protection, potable water, fire alarm system communications, fire suppression, domestic water, storm sewer, diesel supply loop, underground fuel tanks, building card readers, security systems, above-ground propane tanks, electrical emergency power, steam transmission, condensate return system, chilled water systems, electrical power, telecommunication systems, underground telecommunication, and data cabling. The campus includes 17,400 linear feet of piping for both chilled water supply and return and heating hot water supply and return. The chilled water supply and return included piping ranging in size from 8" to 36" in diameter. The heating hot water supply and return included piping ranging in size from 3" to 16" in diameter. The project also included the construction of the new 65,000-square-foot East Plant. The plant provides redundant heating and hot water systems for the campus. Installation of a gas and steam turbine engine facilitates power to operate the facility and includes a heat recovery steam generator and a 1-megawatt BLACKSTART generator, which allows for the emergency start of every system in the building during a power outage. Category: Healthcare (New | Major Addition) CHI St. Luke's Springwoods Village Hospital is a LEED Silver certified, six-story, 155,000 square-foot full-service hospital serving the Springwoods Village development in North Houston. Constructed on a 23-acre site, the campus includes a 55,000-square-foot ambulatory medical center and 100,000 square-foot medical office building. The hospital possesses all of the aspects one would hope for in a full-service healthcare facility. It features emergency rooms, pre-op and post-op surgical services, primary care services, diagnostic imaging, central sterile area, fully functioning kitchen, endoscopy services, and patient rooms. The top floor of the hospital is reserved for the mechanical systems. The campus also features a tree reserve with additions and replacements for those which were removed for construction. For each tree removed, two more were planted in the reserve. The first two floors of the building are reserved for hospital operations. The medical office building is located on floors three through six. Each of these floors possesses 25,000 square feet of shell space totaling 100,000 square feet of medical office space. Memorial City Professional Office Building III added 226,000 square feet of multi-tenant medical office and clinical space to support the expansion of the hospital. The nine-story building is connected to a 387,000-square-foot, 1,125-space parking structure via a sky bridge. Memorial City POB III is vertically zoned to provide multiple tenancy options for a wide range of healthcare providers, ranging from primary and family care to higher profile specialty practices, such as cardiology, oncology, and orthopedics. Building systems were planned and constructed to allow optimum flexibility in leasing and configuration of clinical and medical office spaces to align with Memorial Hermanns physician recruitment and retention programs. Constructed on the densely populated and congested Memorial City campus, Memorial City POB III required meticulous attention to phasing, staging, and site logistics, in concert with the redevelopment and expansion of the adjoining hospital. The floor plan emphasized open concept design with elegant granite, tile, light fixtures, and millwork ceilings for optimal acoustics and aesthetics. Wood ceiling slats and sound baffles were incorporated for further acoustic enhancement. Floor-to-ceiling glass demountable office fronts balanced openness with privacy. Additionally, the build included a striking architectural metal art niche with a live display area to showcase business statistics and diversity.
