Category: District Energy / CUP This is a 65,700-square-foot facility that provides redundant heating and hot water systems for the campus. The first floor of the East Plant's design is over 25 feet above sea level to provide clearance for traffic below. Installation of a gas & steam turbine engine facilitates power to operate the facility and includes a heat recovery steam generator and a 1-megawatt BLACKSTART generator, which allows for the emergency start of every system in the building during a power outage. Water is provided through a thermal energy tank located adjacent to the building with storage capacity of just over 2 million gallons. The tank provides a three-day backup source of evaporation make-up water for the thermal utility generation equipment and shift electrical demand to off peak hours to reduce the strain on the electric grid. Category: Education - K-12 - ISD This project included the demolition and construction of a new school that will replace the existing Baker Sixth Grade School in its entirety. The new Baker school is designed to support a core capacity of 750 students and features administration offices, library, art and science rooms, cafeteria, gymnasium, band, choir, orchestra and ancillary support areas. The school also includes new staff and visitor parking areas, parent drop off/pick-up drive, bus loop drop-off/pick-up, detention area, fencing, security lighting and surveillance cameras, sidewalk paving, play fields, playground equipment and a community walking track. The school was rebuilt on the same site where it previously stood. Construction required 140,000 square feet of demolition, including the foundation in its entirety. This building is considered the first phase of the overall project, with the Orangutan Exhibit being the second phase of the complete make-over of the existing exhibit. The project consisted of the fabrication and installation of new interior caging, transfer tunnels within the building to each holding area, installation of a transfer tunnel thru the roof structure and into the exhibit, and all related structural modifications and roof replacement.
