Because the project occurred in an occupied setting, the construction was phased to accommodate. Great attention was paid to scheduling and phasing during preconstruction. Category: Community / Non-Profit The Blue Triangle is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the 3rd Ward area and raising awareness about water safety through our All Mothers Against Drowning or AMAD initiative. The Blue Triangle (formally the first branch of Houston's YWCA), was founded (1919) during World War I. This basis of this organization grew out of the pressing need for a central meeting place where women and girls of color could safely meet, learn and recreate. It opened at 806 Clay Ave. in the old Masonic Building, under the War Work Council, sponsored by the National YWCA. The Blue Triangle is a 2002 Texas Registered Historical Site. Tellepsen was selected as the construction partner for this complete renovation and historic restoration project. The Blue Triangle was recorded as a Texas Historic Landmark in 2002. The building renovation serves as a swing space for academic faculty offices and lecture/seminar classrooms space. The project includes approximately 13,000 square feet of space to be re-purposed in the Melcher Gymnasium pool area. The pool was in-filled and a build-out of a mezzanine area within the 2 story volume of space. This created approximately 27,000 square feet of space for classrooms and offices. In addition approximately 19,000 square feet of unusable space in Melcher Gymnasium and Garrison Gymnasium was renovated to better suit the needs of the department occupying the space. The Tellepsen Family Downtown YMCA is the flagship of the YMCA of Greater Houston, replacing the previous 70-year-old downtown facility. It provides amenities and services that the former facility was unable to offer, including a three-level parking garage, child watch program, women's wellness center, and indoor running/walking track. Category: Healthcare (New | Major Addition) The Texas Hearing Institute (formerly known as The Center for Hearing and Speech) is the only full-service resource in Houston to assist children with hearing issues to listen and speak without the use of sign language. The Institute offers both clinical and educational services. The educational side focuses on teaching children between the ages of 18 months to 6 years with hearing loss to accelerate their development of spoken language and to prepare them to enter the public school system. The clinic side provides both audiology and speech services. The new Texas Hearing Institute (THI) building is a 49,000-square-foot, single story campus consisting of administrative offices, audiology clinics, speech clinics, and an educational wing. There is also a partnership with Texas Children's Hospital which has a 2,500-square-foot clinic within the THI building providing additional services to the community.
