University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston Infrastructure-Ike Recovery
Owner:
University of Texas
Architect:
AEI Affiliated Engineers
Size:
180 acres
Category:
Infrastructure
The project encompassed a 180-acre, 114 building, campus-wide infrastructure repair of distribution systems including cathodic protection, potable water, fire alarm system communications, fire suppression, domestic water, storm sewer, diesel supply loop, underground fuel tanks, building card readers, security systems, above-ground propane tanks, electrical emergency power, steam transmission, condensate return system, chilled water systems, electrical power, telecommunication systems, underground telecommunication, and data cabling. The campus includes 17,400 linear feet of piping for both chilled water supply and return and heating hot water supply and return. The chilled water supply and return included piping ranging in size from 8" to 36" in diameter. The heating hot water supply and return included piping ranging in size from 3" to 16" in diameter.
The project also included the construction of the new 65,000-square-foot East Plant. The plant provides redundant heating and hot water systems for the campus. Installation of a gas and steam turbine engine facilitates power to operate the facility and includes a heat recovery steam generator and a 1-megawatt BLACKSTART generator, which allows for the emergency start of every system in the building during a power outage. Water is provided through a thermal energy tank located adjacent to the building with storage capacity of just over 2 million gallons.
