Tellepsen Project Honored as First LEED-Certified Public K-12 School in Texas

West Brazos Junior High achieves “green” milestone for Texas public schools

HOUSTON (October 10, 2007) – Fourth-generation Houston builder, Tellepsen Builders announced today that West Brazos Junior High of Columbia-Brazoria Independent School District has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, making it the first public K-12 school to receive certification in Texas.

“LEED is the benchmark for green building and requires seamless collaboration between the owner, architect and contractor to ensure that the building meets the highest efficiency standards,” said Howard Tellepsen, chairman and CEO of Tellepsen Builders. “Collaboration is an inherent part of Tellepsen’s building approach. But LEED projects in particular, require shared commitment from every building partner to ensure sustainable materials and practices are carried throughout the project in the most cost-effective way.”

The LEED Green Building Rating System®, which is a voluntary national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings, is designed to recognize environmental leadership in the building industry, stimulate green competition and raise consumer awareness of green building benefits.

Energy-saving features of the new $9.5 million, 92,000-square foot educational facility include a reflective roof and the use of locally harvested and produced building materials to reduce transportation pollution.
