Port of Houston Authority Chairman to Officially Unveil Howard T. Tellepsen Seafarers’ Center

Witness the first commemoration of a Houston business leader whose dedication to the Port of Houston has resulted in more than 35 years of service to international seamen

WHAT

Port of Houston Authority chairman, James Edmonds will publicly dedicate the Houston International Seafarers’ Center with the unveiling of a custom granite sign generously donated by port businessman Nolan Richardson and complemented with a permanent base and landscaping by the Tellepsen Foundation. The sign officially names the center after the late Houston leader Howard T. Tellepsen, Sr.

Tellepsen is recognized for his 14-year service as the Port of Houston Authority chairman and his commitment to making the vision for an international seamen resource center a reality with the construction of a multi-purpose facility in 1970.

Mr. Edmonds will acknowledge the Tellepsen family and remark on the center’s impact on the Port of Houston to a gathering of business leaders and port officials.

WHY

In 1963, a Belgian sea captain inspired the creation of the Houston International Seaman Center. Howard T. Tellepsen was one of the original visionaries whose dedication led to the construction of the facility. Receiving the blessing of his father, Tom Tellepsen, founder of Tellepsen Construction, Howard led the construction of the center on faith that funds would eventually be raised.  His determination to establish the seafarers’ center resulted in a “one of a kind” service for seamen in the Port of Houston

For the past 35 years, the Howard T. Tellepsen Seafarers’ Center has kept seamen off the street and out of danger while fulfilling social and spiritual needs. Along with the cooperation of three Houston ministers, the Howard T. Tellepsen Seafarers’ Center has flourished as a resource facility, providing billiards, basketball and swimming recreation; a 40-language Bible program and chaplain center representing multiple denominations; international phone services and Internet access; and transportation between the center and seafarers’ ships.

Port of Houston: Once uncelebrated, the Port of Houston is now ranked sixth in the world.  Since the port’s official opening in 1914 and national christening by President Woodrow Wilson, Houston has been linked to 1,053 ports in 203 countries, resulting in a dynamic international trade stop.
