Tellepsen Takes Multi-tasking to a Whole New Level

La Porte ISD Summer 2010 Building Program

With only 84 calendar days to remodel and upgrade six schools consisting of 795,000 square feet, La Porte ISD needed a construction team that could deliver under budget and with the fewest number of delays possible. The district has worked with Tellepsen on various projects since 2006 and has established a highly successful relationship. After almost four years of partnership and $69 million worth of work completed, La Porte ISD was confident that Tellepsen had the expertise, capability and integrity to handle such a lofty multifaceted program.

"The Tellepsen project team worked closely with the architect and owner from preconstruction to completion insuring each of these projects were completed on time and in budget. The teamwork demonstrated from the onset of the project and the commitment made to quality, safety, budget and timelines are personified throughout each of these facilities."

Mike Clausen, Director of Facilities and Construction,
La Porte ISD

With a stringent schedule and numerous simultaneous projects, the possibility for delays was high. Tellepsen Project Executive Jay Hamel knew that preconstruction planning was crucial to avoiding obstacles that could impede timely completion. For this reason, pre-planning began four months prior to the start of construction. A systematic qualitative process was put in place to carefully select subcontractors who would be invited to bid.

Every project was priced individually to ensure fair and feasible division of jobs. Tellepsen's estimator identified allowances, and contingency plans were developed to cover virtually any situation that could slow down progress. This allowed the team to coordinate elements of each project with the architects and subcontractors, and manage the expectations of the 325-person workforce assigned to the program.

Tellepsen also obtained permission to begin some construction early, which was done after 3:00 pm on weekdays, on weekends and on holidays to avoid disrupting the school day. Inspections were coordinated with the school district, the architects, and the cities of La Porte and Deer Park to get permits in hand by the time summer work was scheduled to begin.

Diligent pre-planning and ingenuity resulted in all projects being completed well under budget in 75 calendar days, nine days earlier than scheduled, with no lost time accidents.

Tellepsen understands the demands of complex, rapid K-12 construction and renovation projects, and has the experience and innovation to tackle virtually any challenge.
